Christ In Canada 150 - Canadian Emblems

As we approach Canada Day 2017, we continue to reflect on our National Heritage and the founding of our Country.  In this second post in our “Christ In Canada 150” series, we will consider some of the emblems of our Nation.  In particular, we will look at our official name, motto, and coat of arms.

The name of Canada is officially the “Dominion of Canada”.  This was proposed by Sir Samuel Leonard Tilley, Premiere of New Brunswick, at the 1866 conference in London.  Delegates from the province of Canada (now Ontario and Quebec), New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia had gathered with officials of the British government in order to draft the British North America (BNA) Act.

Tilley had been reading his Bible, as was his custom, and was impressed with a verse from Psalm 72.  When the question arose as to what name our country should be given, he proposed a “Dominion” because he was convinced our country should be a nation under GOD.

Psalms 72:8 KJV  He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.

This brings us to the motto of our Dominion, which is “a mari usque ad mare”.  This is Latin for “from sea to sea”.  This also is taken directly from Psalm 72:8!  Our founding fathers believed that it is GOD who establishes nations, and that we ought to honor HIM.  HE will have dominion from sea to sea!

We even see this motto on our Coat of Arms, written in Latin in the blue banner.  Also written on our Coat of Arms is the phrase “Desiderantes meliorem patriam”.  This is Latin for “they desire a better country”.

Hebrews 11:16 KJV  But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

This speaks of two hopes:  The hope that the Dominion of Canada, under GOD who rules from sea to sea, would be great nation.  But the greater hope is that of the heavenly country in which we have eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.  Let’s keep Christ in Canada 150!
