Through the Bible in 2018!!

Image
Jesus answered, " It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God ". ~ Matthew 4:4 Have you read through the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation?  Why not make 2018 the year to read the entire Bible, or take your family through the Bible? There are several reasons why we should read the Bible DAILY : as Jesus himself says (verse above) the WORD of GOD is bread to our soul  we are told to desire the WORD to grow by it (1 Peter 2:2)  we should meditate on GOD's WORD day and night (Psalm 1:2)  the WORD corrects, instructs, and equips us (2 Timothy 3:16-17)  Of course this takes commitment and discipline.  Accountability can be a great helper, so consider agreeing with other families to read through the Bible together.  This will also lead to some wonderful studies and discussions, since you will be covering the same topics at the same time! Here is a great, and very practical, article:   10 Tips fo

Christ In Canada 150 - The Constitution

Image
Leading up to our celebration of Canada Day 2017, we have looked at several examples of our Christian national heritage and the founding of our Country.  In this final post in our “ Christ In Canada 150 ” series, we will consider our Constitution. The “Dominion of Canada” was originally created in 1867 by an act of the British Parliament, and the Queen’s Assent, as a union of the Province of Canada (Ontario / Quebec), New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.  This is known as the British North American Act, or BNA. It was not until 1982, under Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, that the Constitution was patriated; i.e. transferred under the authority of the Canadian Parliament.  In that Act, Part 1 is known as the “Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms” and it begins with the following preamble: “Whereas Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of  God and the rule of law:” In the opening sentence of our Constitution, our Parliament and all of Canada acknowl

Christ In Canada 150 - Our National Anthem

Image
As we look at some of the examples of Christian heritage in the history of Canada, we should also expect to find such Faith proclaimed in our music and literature.  In this third post in our “ Christ In Canada 150 ” series, we will consider our national anthem, “O Canada”. “O Canada” was originally written in 1880 for the St. Jean de Baptiste day ceremony.  The music was composed by Calixa Lavallee and the words, in French, by poet and judge Sir Adolphe Basile Routhier. Routhier’s original version, translated into English, contains the following stanza: Sacred love of the throne and the altar,   Fill our hearts with your immortal breath!   Among the foreign races,   Our guide is the law:   Let us know how to be a people of brothers,   Under the yoke of faith.   And repeat, like our fathers,   The battle cry: "For Christ and King!"   The battle cry: "For Christ and King!" There were several different versions created over the years, but all co

Christ In Canada 150 - Canadian Emblems

Image
As we approach Canada Day 2017, we continue to reflect on our National Heritage and the founding of our Country.  In this second post in our “ Christ In Canada 150 ” series, we will consider some of the emblems of our Nation.  In particular, we will look at our official name, motto, and coat of arms.  The name of Canada is officially the “ Dominion of Canada ”.  This was proposed by Sir Samuel Leonard Tilley, Premiere of New Brunswick, at the 1866 conference in London.  Delegates from the province of Canada (now Ontario and Quebec), New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia had gathered with officials of the British government in order to draft the British North America (BNA) Act. Tilley had been reading his Bible, as was his custom, and was impressed with a verse from Psalm 72.  When the question arose as to what name our country should be given, he proposed a “Dominion” because he was convinced our country should be a nation under GOD. Psalms 72:8 KJV   He shall have dominion al

Christ In Canada 150 - Holidays and the Gospel

Image
As we approach the celebration of Canada’s 150 th year we are all filled with excitement at the planned events.   But it is also a time to be thankful, and to reflect on the history of our nation.  We ought to be thankful for the peace, prosperity, and freedom that we are blessed with in this country.  And, we ought to reflect on the Christian heritage that we enjoy, which was passed down to us by those who went before us.  In this series of posts we will look at just some of historical examples of “ Christ In Canada 150 ”. The first and most obvious example of our Christian heritage is our holidays.  The word holiday comes from “holy” + “day”; they are days that we regard as holy.  Perhaps the most widely celebrated holy-day is Christmas; the day we set aside to recognize the birth of the Savior! Luke 2:10-11 KJV   And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.   (11)   For unto you is born this day

Written on our Conscience

Image
Written on our Conscience The Gospel to the Romans Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.  20   For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: ~  Romans 1:19-20 KJV     The Apostle Paul begins his explanation of the Gospel by showing us our greatest problem.  That is, while GOD requires perfect righteousness to enter his presence, all we have is sin and guilt.  We see that no one has any excuse, because we all know there is a GOD and that HE deserves our worship.  We can see clearly by what HE has made.  All of creation, the earth, sun and moon, and the universe all point to the fact that an infinitely wise and powerful Creator made all these things.  Even more than that, Paul goes on to say that we know what is morally right; that we are made male and female in GOD

The Dividing Line

The Dividing Line The Gospel to the Romans So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.  16   For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.  17   For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.  18   For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;  ~  Romans 1:15-18 KJV In these verses Paul introduces his readers (of the letter to the Romans) to the Dividing Line ; that is the LAW of GOD.  He says on the one side, that the wrath of GOD is revealed from heaven against those who are unrighteous, those who have broken GOD's law.  But, in the Gospel of Christ, the righteousness of GOD is also revealed.  The LAW of GOD is the Dividing Line between these two sid
